A future-proof partnership with Arvesta to launch large-scale carbon farming
Dossche Mills is working with Arvesta on a sustainable and climate-neutral food chain. Therefore, Arvesta is launching Carbon Farming on a large scale in Belgium, working with the agricultural sector and its partners in the food industry to reduce the CO2 footprint.
Arvesta and Dossche Mills are launching a pilot project aimed at making the cultivation of local baking wheat more sustainable. Different farming practices can be applied to directly reduce CO2 emissions or to store CO2 in the soil via carbon farming. The pilot project with Arvesta, in collaboration with Belgian farmers and the certified Soil Capital platform, is part of Dossche Mills' broad sustainability strategy.
As a market leader in the Benelux, Dossche Mills has major, clear goals regarding sustainability of wheat chain management. In doing so, it aims for sustainability overall. Apart from CO2 reduction, Dossche Mills also focuses on other sustainability parameters, such as soil quality, biodiversity, healthy food and wellness, and transparent and ethical business practices.
In order to reduce the CO2footprint throughout the entire wheat chain, it is very important to take raw material production into account as well. This is because the cultivation of baking wheat accounts for a significant proportion of the total CO2 footprint of flour. Reducing the CO2 footprint of a loaf of bread, in other words, starts in the field.
“As a leading flour mill in Benelux, Dossche Mills processes significant quantities of grain. Sustainability is at the heart of our family business and we therefore have ambitious targets in terms of reducing the CO2 footprint of the entire wheat chain. The collaboration with Arvesta is a unique opportunity to jointly contribute to accelerating the transition to a sustainable climate-neutral food chain.”
